Arrive in Niagara Falls

Welcome aboard! We’re off to thundering Niagara Falls, one of Shenandoah Tours’ favorite vacation spots. Journey north and by late afternoon we cross the border and enter the Canadian side of the Niagara River arriving in spectacular Niagara Falls, a natural wonder with exceptional beauty and awe. Horseshoe Falls creates a silver gray mist, complete with a rainbow, as six million cubic feet of water drop nearly 200 feet per minute. Our host hotel is the Country Inn & Suites. For our enjoyment there are a variety of shops, restaurants, and sightseeing attractions as well as Casino Niagara. A free evening for individual interests.

Visit historic Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, whose three-day battle in July 1863 is known as the turning point of the Civil War. It was here that the Union victory ended General Robert E. Lee’s second and most ambitious invasion of the North, and it was the inspiration for President Abraham Lincoln’s immortal Gettysburg Address. Highlights of our tour include the Museum of the Civil War, Cyclorama, Battlefield Grounds tour, and President Eisenhower homeplace. Step back into history and reflect on this hallowed ground that has captivated the hearts of Americans for over a century!

    Day 1- Wednesday - June 10
Travel to Gettysburg Cyclorama / Museum of the Civil War

This morning we travel to Gettysburg, the scene of one of the most decisive battles of the Civil War. We visit the Visitors Center to see the Cyclorama, a 360-degree painting depicting the Battle of Gettysburg. This breathtaking canvas painting took more than a year to complete and now stands as tall as a four-story structure and is longer than a football field. Next we’ll visit the Museum of the Civil War to view one of the world’s largest collections of artifacts and memorabilia. We’ll enjoy a two-night stay in Gettysburg as well as an included dinner this evening. (D)

    Day 2 - Thursday - June 11
    Eisenhower Farm / Gettysburg Battlefield

Step back in time and get a close-up view of President Dwight Eisenhower’s home life at the Eisenhower Farm. Reflect on the farm’s history as a weekend retreat and humble gathering place for leaders from around the world. Afterwards, time for shopping and browsing in downtown Gettysburg. This afternoon we’ll meet our licensed battlefield guide and begin a driving tour of America’s largest Civil War Battlefield, containing more than 40 miles of scenic avenues. Over 1600 monuments and cannons dot the landscape in memory of those who fought and died here during the three-day battle of July 1863, leaving 51,000 casualties. Nearby we’ll visit the Historic Round Barn, built in 1914. Surrounded by picturesque Pennsylvania foothills, it is one of only a handful of round barns surviving today. The remainder of the day is free for individual interests. (B))

    Day 3 - Friday - June 12
Beyond the Battle Museum / Travel Home

Enjoy a morning visit to Gettysburg’s Beyond the Battle Museum offering a unique look at the history of Gettysburg going far beyond the famous three-day battle.
