We’re off for our flight to sunny San Diego to embark on an amazing cruise aboard Holland America’s ms Veendam bound for the fascinating Panama Canal, one of the world’s engineering masterpieces. We’ll enjoy sailing along the California coast and discovering the color, culture and sunny disposition of Mexico. Our cruise ends in Fort Lauderdale, where we’ll board our flight home.

The Panama Canal has always inspired wonder. Now the “Big Ditch” is getting even bigger, with yet another set of locks and wider shipping lanes to accommodate today’s super-size ships. Come experience history in the re-making as our luxurious mid-size ship easily navigates the original locks, its illustrious story brought to life by an onboard Canal commentator. See the sunny beaches and lush rain forests on either side.

PUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO

“PV” (as it is affectionately known) retains the essence of the fishing village it once was. Viejo Vallarta, the old town, is a mix of red-tiled buildings, cobbled streets, chic shops and busy open markets.

HUATULCO, MEXICO

Warm sun, sandy beaches and nine beautiful bays in every shade of blue await. Jungles teem with birds & are the nesting grounds of endangered sea turtles.

PUERTO QUETZAL, GUATEMALA

In the cultured little country of Guatemala, modern Maya still weave their stories on backstrap looms, and the great stone temples of Tikal stand in silent testament to ancient Mayan ingenuity.

CORINTO, NICARAGUA

Nicaragua is the next great spot for eco-, cultural and culinary tourism. The port town of Corinto boasts colonial-era architecture, and is close to Leon, the beautiful city established by Spanish conquistadores in 1524. Be sure to sample the traditional dish called vigoron, a hearty plate heaped with pork, boiled yuca and cabbage salad.

PANAMA CANAL

The wonders of this 51-mile engineering feat continue as the Panama Canal celebrates its 101st anniversary.

PUERTO CALDERA, COSTA RICA

This small town makes for an ideal base from which to venture out to explore the country’s multiple national parks. Activities include snapping photos of gushing waterfalls, sightseeing near active volcanoes, bird-watching in nature reserves and sanctuaries, and horseback riding on Pacific beaches. Enjoy shopping for local handicrafts as well as sampling traditional Tico cuisine, especially gallo pinto-a combination of rice and beans eaten any time of the day or night.

CARTAGENA, COLOMBIA

Following several sieges against the city in the late 1500's, Spain spent millions building the fortifications that are today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town protected by these walls is also part of that designation. Walk deeply textured alleyways through some of the best-preserved colonial neighborhoods of the Americas. For a change of pace, visit one of the lovely beaches. Bocagrande is close to the city, and Playa Blanca is south across the bay.

HALF MOON CAY, BAHAMAS

Holland America’s pristine private island offers everything we need for a day of play in paradise; a two-mile crescent of perfect beach; an interior lagoon; private beachside cabanas.

A world of enjoyment awaits aboard Royal Caribbean’sGrandeur of the Seas! This nine-night cruise departing from Baltimore, Maryland, sails along the east coast with ports of call at Kings Wharf, Bermuda; Nassau, Bahamas; and CocoCay, Bahamas.

BERMUDA

Bermuda is a string of islands 21 miles long and 2 miles wide. The mainland is a graceful chain of seven islands joined by roads and bridges, while the colony itself is composed of more than 150 islands. We’re sure to fall in love with the courteous, British-accented people whose smiles are as warm as the Bermuda sun. The surrounding sea is a perfect deep blue-green and the sands are a delicate shell-pink. After only a few hours here, we’ll agree that the beauty of Bermuda is simply unmatched.

Hamilton, the island’s capital, is a latticework of pastel homes surrounded by tropical flowers, shuttered windows, old world carriages and clusters of shops filled with fine bone china, Irish linens and Scottish tweeds. Although our ship does not dock in Hamilton, public transportation (bus & ferry) is available from the ship to Hamilton. There is a fee for this service.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS

Nassau, the capital of The Bahamas, is located on 21-mile long New Providence, the Bahamas 11th largest island. This cruise ship darling, just 50 short miles off the coast of Florida, is known for its Junkanoo celebrations and famous conch chowder. As we discover the charming narrow streets, colorful clapboard houses, and picket fences, we understand why some people call this part of the world “paradise.”

COCOCAY, BAHAMAS

Guests dive into the crystal-clear Bahamas at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s private, eco-certified island. With radiant waters begging to be explored, we can discover a mesmerizing underwater world of stingrays, tropical reefs and sunken wrecks. Or, spend the day relaxing on pristine beaches of downy-white sand, beside translucent blue waters. Whatever we choose to do, this is our island to enjoy!

A world of enjoyment awaits aboard Royal Caribbean’sGrandeur of the Seas! This nine-night cruise departing from Baltimore, Maryland, sails along the scenic Eastern Seaboard with ports of call at Boston, Massachusetts, Portland and Bar Harbor, Maine; Saint John, New Brunswick (Bay of Fundy), and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS

In the United States' oldest city, colonial heritage is the backdrop for an inviting mix of culture and lively street life. See where Revolutionary history took place along Boston's Freedom Trail.

PORTLAND, MAINE

Discover the beauty and excitement of Portland, an old seacoast town filled with galleries, boutiques, and restaurants. It's the second largest oil port on the East Coast.

BAR HARBOR, MAINE

Nestled on the shores of Mount Desert Island and surrounded by Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor features some of the most spectacular scenery imaginable. The rock bound Coast, soaring granite cliffs, majestic mountains, and blue waters have attracted the Rockefellers, Astors, and Vanderbilts for over 200 years, and they continue to enchant visitors today

SAINT JOHN, NEW BRUNSWICK

Founded by Loyalists escaping the Revolutionary War in 1785, Saint John has emerged as a thriving port city. Its restored historic waterfront and surrounding natural beauty have made Saint John a wonderful destination. While we're here, we may want to add an excursion to the amazing Reversing Falls Rapids, Saint John's best known attraction. Twice daily the powerful tides of the Bay of Fundy rise faster than the river can empty. When this happens, the tide attempts to push the river back upstream, then the tide ebbs, and the river appears to reverse itself and flow over the rocks, creating the appearance of reversing rapids.

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA

Welcome to Halifax, the capital city of Nova Scotia. Peggy's Cove, Citadel Hill, and the Acadian Country are just a few of the sights that will herald our arrival here. The Historic Properties located along the waterfront have been fully restored, and the cobblestone streets and long boardwalks are lined with a wonderful array of boutiques, cafes and pubs.
