THE COLORFUL NORTH CAROLINA COAST

“The Lost Colony”

JUNE 9-11, 2010

TOUR #10018

3 DAYS / 2 NIGHTS

3 MEALS = 2B, 1D

It’s a great day along the colorful North Carolina Coast filled with legends, lights and lore...join us for this special time!  Enjoy the beauty of the sun, sand, sea, lighthouses, seashells, and seafood.  Visit the Wright Brothers National Memorial, and see The Lost Colony, the story that remains a mystery to this day.  See Bodie Island Lighthouse and the East Coast’s tallest sand dune.  Lodging is at the oceanfront Hilton Garden Inn/Outer Banks.

Day 1 * Wednesday * June 9

All aboard!  Today’s travel takes us to North Carolina’s Outer Banks, a chain of barrier islands lying between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pamlico Sound.  Arrive mid-afternoon in Kitty Hawk at the oceanfront Hilton Garden Inn.  Spend a free evening enjoying the amenities of our hotel and beachcombing in the surf and sand.

 Day 2 * Thursday * June 10

Enjoy breakfast at our hotel and some free time for beachcombing before heading out to Bodie Island Lighthouse, with its black and white horizontal bands.  The most picturesque lighthouse on the Outer Banks, it began operating in 1872.  Next we visit Roanoke Island Festival Park to see a replica of the ship Elizabeth II in which the colonists sailed from England.  Spend the remainder of the day at the hotel enjoying the sun, sand, and surf.  Dinner is included before an enjoyable evening of drama at  The Lost Colony, Paul Green’s story of America’s first English colony.  Decide for yourself what happened to this colony, which vanished without a trace.  This 400-year-old mystery still  remains.  Return to our Inn for a restful night.  (B,D)

Day 3 * Friday * June 11

Following breakfast we’re off to the Wright Brothers National Memorial where in December 1903, they  made the first powered airplane flight.  We visit the memorial that commemorates that accomplishment, then pay a visit to  Jockey’s Ridge State Park to see the East Coast’s tallest sand dune.  All too soon, our tour of the colorful North Carolina Coast has come to an end as we board our coach for the trip home.  However, fond memories of this barrier island remains with us as we return home.  (B)
