Discover scenic beauty, visit heritage sites, tour great estates and gardens, visit West Point Military Academy, and dine at the Culinary Institute of America. Come along with Shenandoah Tours and discover this “land of Rip Van Winkle.”
Day 1 * Thursday * August 16
This morning we begin a delightful four-day tour to the scenic Hudson River Valley region of New York. Our journey north leads us to the Fishkill area for a visit to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, a memorial for veterans who have earned this honor. Soon we arrive at our area hotel for a three night stay. Dinner is included this evening. (D)
Day 2 * Friday * August 17
Join our local guide for a day of exploring in the valley. Our first stop is Eleanor Roosevelt’s Val-Kill, a Dutch Colonial stone house used by the First Lady as a retreat from 1926 until 1945 when it became her permanent home. Actually this was her most beloved residence. Afterwards we’re off to the Culinary Institute of America to have lunch in one of five award winning restaurants. After savoring this fine dining experience, tour the institution and view the teaching methods used to train America’s finest chefs. Then travel to Springwood, Franklin D. Roosevelt’s birthplace, lifetime residence and Summer White House. This, the most famous home in the valley, contains memorabilia and personal items of the President. The grave-sites of both Franklin D. and Eleanor Roosevelt are here in the rose garden. After our memorable day, we’ll enjoy dinner at Beekman Arms, the oldest Inn in America. (B,L,D)
Day 3 * Saturday * August 18
Today a short drive takes us to West Point for a guided tour of this military academy. Highlights include the Cadet Chapel and Trophy Point with breathtaking views of the Hudson River. Enjoy the visitors’ center and the museum containing military memorabilia and paintings. Following lunch on own enjoy a narrated cruise aboard the “Rip Van Winkle” with views of two lighthouses, and the Mills Mansion. Afterwards our leisurely drive takes us to the spectacular Mohonk Mountain House, a grand 265-room Victorian castle, and one of America’s oldest family owned resorts located on Lake Mohonk. Enjoy dinner in the dining room overlooking the beautiful Shawangunk Mountains, with time to browse through the award-winning gardens. A spectacular day here in the Hudson River Valley! (B,D)
